Linux Manager / Systems
Salary Range:
100 - 130K  plus Performance Based Bonus

Role:

The ideal candidate will be able to manage our migration into the IBM system Z. The individual in this role will lead a team from a project management perspective. The ideal candidate will also have Linux expertise and a Project Management background.

Responsibility for the providing comprehensive support for design, implementation, and 3rd level support of all UNIX and Linux systems and its associated infrastructure.

The Systems Manager will provide expert advice and counsel to users, management and IT project teams for systems of the most complex nature (typically crossing function/location lines). Evaluates new technologies and develops departmental standard practices. Recognized as technical expert within the department and organization in a specific engineering discipline. Provides leadership to staff members and teams in a specific area of expertise and in problem analysis techniques. Identifies or reacts to problems related to the technology infrastructure or in support of the UNIX and Linux environments. Has the ability to demonstrate a broad knowledge level across multiple areas of information technology. May be involved as a key team member on strategic or enterprise-wide technology issues.

RESPONSIBLITIES:

The UNIX/Linux Engineering Team responsibilities include, end to end responsibility for all Linux and UNIX based operating system and server platforms related functions which include, but not limited to:

Design, implementation and operation of all UNIX/Linux Server Infrastructure.

Design, implementation of UNIX and Linux based virtualization strategies.

Must have expert understanding of the Novell SUSE Linux and SUN Solaris OS and server hardware, and software packaging. Strong understanding of networking and IP address management is required. This role will serve as a centralized interface for all UNIX and Linux related engineering and operational related items.

Strong understanding of software architectures, software lifecycle tactic, and system development. Must be able to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences. Needs to have a good understanding and experience of server and client side architectures and systems design. Should have an understanding of current industry trends and their advantages with ability to right fit into an existing environment. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Understands requested changes to the tool, its configuration and implications to all user areas. Works with all development areas to scope, develop and test approved changes.

Qualified candidates will possess the following qualifications/skill sets:


Define and implement automated system installation/configuration procedures.

Establish the appropriate environment and project life cycle for Development, Testing, and Deployment.

Create System Run Books, defining day-to-day support, maintenance, troubleshooting of the infrastructure.

Analysis of existing installations.

Establish performance models and validation techniques.

Establish best practices for monitoring and forecasting of system/application capacity with integration into EMS.

Recommend changes and improvements to the current environment.

Work closely with the Development and Operations to ensure the readiness of the applications and the appropriate support are in place.

Document all operational processes and procedures to manage all aspects of the deployed systems.

EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE:

~Knowledge or expereince of IBM System Z desired.
~Extensive troubleshooting and performance monitoring skills.

Extensive experience of the following:
~ Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
~ SUN Solaris Operating Systems
~X86 hardware architectures
~ SPARC hardware architectures
~ High Availability strategies
~ Knowledge of TIBCO
~ Knowledge of Websphere Application Server

~Strong understanding of network infrastructure and systems engineering.
~Must understand network architecture and specific network components.
~Skilled in the development or re-engineering of systems and processes.
~Development and Operations background with excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
~Understanding of network communication protocols (TCP/IP etc).
~Understanding of application load balancing and recovery mechanisms a plus.
~Scripting languages: Perl, VB, Batch Scripts a big plus.
~Skilled in the development or re-engineering of systems and processes.
~Strong knowledge and understand of the following:
~Fail-over and recovery mechanisms (Cisco LD/CSM, Session Servers, etc).
~ Network infrastructures (PIX, CSM, LD, GLB, etc).
~ Network communication protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL/TLS, RMI, RPC, etc).
~ Systems and Database (SQL / Oracle) administration is a plus.

SKILLS:

-~Excellent project management skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and good presentation skills.
~Strong understanding of project management methodologies and processes.
~Excellent time management and organizational skills. Must be able to prepare, present, and maintain technical documentation.
~Excellent computer skills are necessary in Microsoft Word, Excel, Presentation, Project, and Visio.

Prior Work Experience:

~Extensive Systems Engineering experience within e-commerce or financial services industry
